PTA chairman requests leather development plan

04/10/2012
The new chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association has urged the government to help the leather industry grow and predicts it could be worth $3 billion in three years, given the right support.

Agha Saiddain told local paper The Business Recorder that the government need to treat it as "model sector" in the Strategic Policy Framework 2012-15 in order for it to grow from its current $1 billion.

He said while most countries have been increasing their exports of leather and leathergoods, Pakistan's exports declined 4% during 2011.

He said: "We have no leather development plan and for this reason we have lost our market share to other countries in South Asia."

He urged the Ministry of Commerce to conduct a study of incentives allowed in India, Bangladesh and China, and to provide a level playing field.
