Natural leather or metallic finishes most popular at Le Cuir

Natural leather with minimal finish was most in demand at the recent Le Cuir À Paris leather show, according to the organisers, with a few two-tone, metallic and printed skins the exception to the rule.

Buyers and designers were at the Paris exhibition sourcing material and generating ideas for their autumn-winter 13/14 collections.

Calfskins with no finish, displaying the irregularity of the grain, were very popular, with the preference for supple skins, soft to the touch and with a heavy drape. Natural, unspoiled goat skin was also requested by buyers.

When asked to summarise what they had been asked for, tanners said "as little finish as possible". However, at the other end of the spectrum, metallic finishes, particularly on goatskin and fish leathers, saw plenty of interest.

In the exotics section, alongside crocodile and other reptiles, there was renewed interest in shagreen, salmon and perch.

In terms of colour, visitors asked for natural shades - the most in-demand tones were chocolate, brown, gold and cognac. Pastel colours and shades of pink were also popular, as were blues in shades of indigo, navy and petrol.
