Follow-up meeting on lifecycle analysis of leather

03/10/2012
As mentioned on leatherbiz in September, the eighteenth session of the United Nations Industrial Organisation’s Leather Panel took place in Shanghai at the start of the month. It addressed the issue of lifecycle analysis methodologies and how they apply to the production of leather. This resulted in debate over the leather industry’s share of the carbon footprint and water consumption of cattle before slaughter.

UNIDO and other industry organisations, including leather’s representative body to the European Commission, COTANCE, and the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), have said they want the leather industry to agree a method for presenting “a fair and accurate calculation of the carbon and water footprint of leather”.

As a follow-up to the discussion in Shanghai, UNIDO has now organised a meeting that will take place in Bologna on the second day of the forthcoming Lineapelle exhibition, Wednesday, October 10, starting at 10.30 am.

At the Bologna meeting, there will be a public presentation of a technical report on the topic, written by Milan-based consultant Federico Brugnoli. There will also be comments from UNIDO, COTANCE and IULTCS, plus a question-and-answer session.
