Argentina to pip Uruguay as biggest per capita beef consumer

New figures from the government in Buenos Aires suggest that Argentina is poised to regain top spot in terms of per capita beef consumption.

Neighbouring Uruguay topped the table in 2011 with an average of 60 kilos of beef per person, compared to 54 kilos in Argentina. A recent statement suggested the 2012 figure for Uruguay would be 62 kilos.

Argentina said in July that its consumption had fallen over the last 18 months to an average annual figure of 52.8 kilos, its lowest beef consumption since 1914. However, a new announcement says the figure for 2012 will be 63.1 kilos.

Observers have said the increase has come about because a higher slaughter and restrictions on beef exports have made more of the meat available domestically.
