Slaughter and average weights up in Brazil

Official figures from Brazil’s National Statistics Institute, IBGE, show that in the second quarter of 2012, abattoirs across the country slaughtered more than 7.6 million head of cattle.

Slaughter for the quarter was 5.6% higher than for the first three months of 2012 and 7.9% higher than for the second quarter of 2011.

Combined weight of the carcasses of the cattle that went to slaughter was also up, reaching a total of almost 1.8 million tonnes, an increase of 6.6% on the first quarter of 2012 and of 8.7% compared to the second quarter of 2011. Weight averaegd 235.1 kilos per carcass in the second quarter of 2012, 1.6 kilos more than a year ago.

Around 67% of the total slaughter took place in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.
