Belarus fights to keep domestic footwear industry competitive
28/09/2012
Footwear produced in Belarus accounts for about 50% of the domestic market, according to the Belarussian Telegraph Agency, but membership of the WTO will result in lower customs duties on imported footwear.
To counter this, Bellegrom, Belarus’s former Ministry of Light Industry, has created the holding company to help keep domestic leather and footwear companies competitive.
Tanneries will tailor their production to the needs of footwear factories and the holding company will provide leather to national companies at cost price, lowering the cost of the final product.
It will include a tannery in Gatovo, Gomel Trud and Belwest footwear producers. “Our goal is to show they are efficient,” said Lyudmila Tyaglova, deputy chairman of Bellegprom, at a press conference.
Bellegprom is the association of textile, knitting, sewing, footwear and tanning enterprises of Belarus, and lobbies for the interests of its 116 member companies.
