EU beef exports take a hit

27/09/2012
Beef exports from the European Union (EU) fell sharply in the first seven months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.

Last year was a good year for EU beef as exchange rates and high demand led to substantial growth. However, changes in regulations, more challenging exchange rates and a fall in demand have brought about the decline in the January-July 2012 period.

EU member states exported almost 114,000 tonnes of beef over the period, a fall of 41%.

New legislation in Turkey made it easier for importers there to bring in live cattle for slaughter in Turkish abattoirs, rather than beef. Turkey was the biggest export market for EU beef in 2011, but the volume reaching that market in the first seven months of this year was 71% lower than at the same time last year at 25,683 tonnes.

Between January and July 2012, Russia was the biggest export market for EU beef, with packers shipping just over 28,000 tonnes, but this too is a decline (of 34%) compared to last year.
