India: 20,000 jobs to be created in 'leather clusters'

27/09/2012
The Indian government has given the go-ahead to two large ‘leather clusters’ in the Hardoi and Kanpur districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Infrastructure and industrial development commissioner Anil Kumar Gupta said the leather parks will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, technology and production to meet the demands of domestic markets and standards for export.

Local press reported that 300 acres of land has been identified in Sandila Industrial area (Hardoi) and 625 acres in Ramaipur. The clusters will include effluent treatment plants and rain water harvesting.

A government official said each of clusters could create employment for 10,000 people and they are expected to be in operation in four years. The government is contributing 70% of the funding.
