Uruguayans to increase per capita beef consumption to 62 kilos in 2012

The national meat institute of Uruguay (INAC) has predicted that the South American country’s citizens will consolidate their position as the world’s biggest consumers of beef in 2012.

INAC has said it expects per capita consumption of beef to increase by 2% this year to reach an average of 62 kilos per person.

However, Gabriel Costas, who analyses the domestic market for INAC, has told local media that beef consumption in Uruguay has probably reached its upper limit now. He said: “We’ve hit the ceiling now. There is scope for growth in pork and poultry in Uruguay, but not for beef.”
