Export success continues for Italian leathergoods

Manufacturers and brands from Italy shipped leathergoods worth just over EUR 2 billion in the January-May period in 2012 compared to EUR 1.6 billion in the same period in 2011. These figures do not include footwear.
Switzerland, France, the US, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Germany the UK, China and Spain were the top ten export destinations, in descending order, with all of them recording double-digit growth except Switzerland (where the increase was 6.7%). Growth in leathergoods exports to China over the five months increased by 65.3% in 2012.
Outside the top ten, Brazil recorded growth of 187.2%, albeit from a much smaller base. It imported leathergoods worth just over EUR 2 million in January-May 2012 compared to around EUR 700,000 in the same period in 2011. Growth in the United Arab Emirates was over 45%.
Italian handbags were the biggest-selling type of product, bringing in almost EUR 1.3 billion, up by 25.4% compared to the previous year.
