Denim-effect crocodile bag among Mipel highlights

Milan-based handbag fair Mipel has closed its doors on a three-day event that saw almost 400 exhibitors showing their spring/summer 2013 collections.

A panel made up of leading names in the fashion press singled out companies that stood out in three categories: excellence, company background and upcoming talent.

In the excellence category, Italian brand Serapian presented two novel ways of finishing crocodile leather: Cocco Denim, tanned to reflect the distressed look of jeans and dyed indigo blue, and Cocco Talco, a semi-glossed leather finished to feel like talcum powder. The Cocco Talco is available in a large weekend bag and Cocco Denim features in a soft, over-the-shoulder bag.

Piquadro, a bags and laptops maker, was praised for its history, while Italian firm Maria Biandr won the accolade for best new talent at the show.

“Many companies started off at Mipel and became famous names, from Coccinelle to Roberta Di Camerino, Prada to Ferragamo or Borbonese to Armani,” said Giorgio Cannara, chairman of Aimpes Mipel. “This reflects the credibility of an event which, every six months, points the spotlight on tomorrow's leaders. At Mipel, the star factor is product quality, which includes design quality, manufacturing quality, the quality of the materials and of a certified, sustainable production chain.”

Desigual, Bric's, Roncato Valigeria, Tosca Blu, Moschino, Cerruti 1881 and Timberland were among the brands exhibiting.
