India: leather exporters look to Saudi Arabia

17/09/2012
The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) in India is hoping to foster trade networks with Saudi Arabia and has organised a buyers and sellers meeting in Jeddah for interested parties.

Originally slated for March this year, the meeting was postponed after permission from the Saudi government was not granted in time, and it has now been rearranged for December.

According to the CLE, Saudi Arabia has recently adopted a "look east” policy and is keen to increase imports from Asian countries.

India's export of leather and leather products to Saudi Arabia increased from $15.7 million in 2006 to $40.9 million in 2011.

Leather footwear and components currently account for 59% of India's total leather exports to Saudi Arabia and leather accessories account for 38%.
