Louisiana also supplies farm-raised alligators to the meat and skins market, with the value from this sector reaching $38.5 million in 2011 compared to $29 million in 2010.
In terms of volume the number of farm-raised alligators harvested dropped from 303,810 in 2009 to 161,840 in 2010 and by another 55% in 2011 to 72,828, according to a new report from the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
However, high demand for alligator skins last year led to an increase in prices.
The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board has estimated that the state’s alligator harvest has a total economic impact of $104 million per year.
