Over half the cattle slaughter in Paraguay is in Brazilian hands

The recent acquisition of Paraguayan packer firm Frigomerc by Minerva means that Brazilian companies, notably JBS, Torlim and now Minerva, have control of around 60% of cattle slaughter and beef exports in the neighbouring country.

For the full year in 2011, these three Brazilian companies had a 49% share of beef exports from Paraguay, 72,000 out of 142,000 tonnes. In terms of value, they had a $377 million share of total export earnings of $755.7 million. This is without the figures for Frigomerc.

Recently acquired Frigomerc is believed to have been the second-biggest packer firm in Paraguay with almost 20,000 tonnes in exports in 2011 and a daily slaughter capacity of between 1,500 and 2,000 head.
