Myanmar’s leather industry faces challenges

The chairman of the Myanmar Leather Association has told press in the country that the leather production industry struggles to compete against international rivals because of a lack of investment in technology and infrastructure.

“The local leather industry is stagnating because most producers can only make the raw material, which some countries consider inferior and choose not to import,” Dr Tin Aung Shwe told the Myanmar Times.

“The main issues include a lack of electricity, inadequate water treatment and drainage systems and insufficient space to operate.”

Only one company, Silver Swan, is a capable of making semi-finished leather, with the others limited to producing raw leather.

The Myanmar Leather Association was established in June and aims to expand the industry by sharing technology, developments and skills, he said.
