Hide and skin firm wants to expand

Local media say around 150 people have complained about a proposed move for Harwood Hides, from Great Harwood, near Blackburn. The company wants to move to a new site nearby, but local people have objected on the grounds of increased traffic, noise, smell and use of chemicals.
Simon Scott, owner of the company, has responded by saying that the complaints represent a less-than-complete understanding of the proposals. “We don’t have any machinery and we don’t use any chemicals on the site,” he told a local newspaper. “We don’t process the hides and skins; we just salt them and then ship them out.”
Mr Scott pointed out that the company had passed without any problem an odour assessment carried out by the authorities.
