In the build-up to that feat, Apple had published its official supplier list and while almost all of the 150 companies on the list represented suppliers of materials, assembly and packaging for Apple products, two names that caught the eye in Italy were those of two Arzignano tanneries, Gruppo Dani and Gruppo Peretti, who are official suppliers of leather to make protective covers for tablet computer, the iPad.
On hearing the news, Gruppo Dani chief executive, Giancarlo Dani, told local media: “I hope our being mentioned on the list is a good sign for the whole area around Arzignano. We would like to be seen as an example of a well structured company and an indicator that a happier time is ahead for the local economy here.”
Gruppo Dani is one of two finalists for Europe for the third programme of Tannery of the Year.
One local newspaper, Il Giornale di Vicenza, said on reporting the news that Arzignano generates 1% of all of Italy’s gross domestic product (estimated at more than $2 trillion and eighth biggest in the world), and 10% of the value of the entire global leather industry.
