Ractopamine legislation offers hope for US beef in Taiwan

21/08/2012
The US beef industry has expressed hope that new legislation in Taiwan can help boost its exports there.

Legislators in Taiwan recently approved a bill allowing imported and domestic beef to contain safe levels of animal feed additive ractopamine. The bill will now be subject to public consultation. Controversy surrounding the substance has had a negative impact on US beef consumption in Taiwan in 2012, with exports from the US falling by 60% in volume in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2011, falling to 6.6 million kilos, and by 53% in value at $42 million.

Joel Haggard, senior vice president of the Asia Pacific region for the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), has said the regulatory change will definitely help reverse the downward trend in US beef exports to Taiwan.
