Bangladesh leathergoods sector grows its market share
According to Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), growth
within the country’s leather export sector fell to 17% in the financial year
2011-12, down from 41% during the previous year.
Exports totalled $765 million during the year compared
with $651 million in 2010-11. Footwear and leathergoods exports accounted for just
one-fifth of the industry’s total export earnings a decade ago, but this figure
has now risen to 56%, according to the EPB. A surge in footwear, bag, belt and
purse/wallet demand has prompted the increase, it claims.
