Indonesia’s leathergoods, footwear, textile and garment industries saw a 2.9% rise in the first half of this year, the country’s industry minister has been reported as saying – although this is less than the 9.5% increase in the corresponding period last year.

MS Hidayat said the government is putting in place measures to boost exports after they reportedly declined 6.1% during the period.

"Besides fiscal incentives, the government will improve import control efforts by implementing non-tariff barrier policies among others through limiting entrance ports for certain commodities and improving import administration policies, and by optimising anti-dumping and safeguarding measures," he said, according to local press.

The government will also ask producers to look at expanding into Africa and the Middle East, he said.
