The director of the acadamy that leather chemicals firm TFL runs in Montebello in northern Italy has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Northampton.

Mauro Magnaguagno, director of the TFL Academy received an honorary doctorate from the university during the summer in recognition for the relationship he has built up between the academy, located close to the Arzignano tanning industry cluster, and the university’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies.

It’s a relationship that began ten years ago and a week-long trip for Northampton leather technology students to Arzignano, for study time at the TFL academy and at some of the tannery and machinery companies in the local area, has become an established part of the teaching at Northampton University.

In addition the University has started to have a steady stream of students from northern Italy come to Northampton for full-time courses.

At the time of the award, Rachel Garwood, director of the university’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies, said: “Mauro is, and will always remain, a loyal, dedicated and vocal supporter of leather education and the industry in all its guises. He has been a constant and steady supporter and promoter of University of Northampton leather activities in northern Italy.”
