Olympics give Kolkata leathergoods an unexpected boost

08/08/2012

Exports of leathergoods, vegetables and fruit from Kolkata to the UK have risen rapidly since the start of the London Olympics.

Exports of handbags, wallets and purses have really taken off, and are expected to remain high until the end of August.

Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, which usually exports 15-20 tonnes of leathergoods by air and 8-10 tonnes by sea, is currently exporting 70 tonne – exclusively by air – to meet the increased demand.

"Because of the ongoing Olympics in London, demands for leather goods in the UK have increased many folds. The mode of transportation has also been changed," company spokesperson Badal Dey told NRIpress.com.
