Investigation into California BSE case concludes

08/08/2012
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US has annonced the results of investigations into the case of bovine  spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) that occurred in California in April.

According to the agency, the results support the original conclusion that the case was of the “atypical” variety that appears to occur spontaneously in extremely rare cases.

Working with the California Department of Food and Agriculture over several months, the FDA obtained the lifetime feed history of the affected dairy cow, a 10-year-old Holstein. The agencies then investigated 12 feed suppliers and reviewed their history of compliance with BSE feed regulations.

The FDA has now said that the review found that compliance with BSE feed regulations was “excellent” and that none of the facilities had used prohibited material in their feed manufacturing during the entire period of interest.
