Power failures reduce Kanpur leather manufacturers’ efficiency
The leather manufacturing zone in Kanpur, India, is
believed to have suffered losses of approximately 4.5 billion rupees ($80.7
million) in just two days.
According to the Indian Industries Association (IIA), the
power cuts forced around 6,800 manufacturers, including a number of tanneries,
to suspend operations.
Businesses in the cluster were already receiving less
power than they should have been, but the grid failure compounded the problem.
Workers were sent home and, in some cases, order deadlines were missed.
While power is now back on, it is still not sufficient to
resume full manufacturing capacity.
