Pakistani government reassures leather industry

Commerce secretary Munir Qureshi has members of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) that the government will support its endeavours to increase the value of the country’s leather and leathergoods exports.

Addressing industry representatives including PTA chairman SM Naseem on July 30, Mr Qureshi said that the commerce ministry would also support the PTA’s push for a total ban on livestock exports so that raw materials can be conserved for local tanners.

It will also work to put an end to the smuggling and mis-declaration of wet blue leather. This practice has become increasingly common in a bid to avoid the 20% duties imposed on leather exports.
