Wenzhou reduces its tannery numbers by nearly 80%

The authorities in Wenzhou in eastern China have carried out a closure and forced merger programme that has reduced by almost 80% the number of the tanneries operating there. In addition, Wenzhou has announced that all wet-end processing there will cease by July 2013.

Pingyang county, part of the area that falls under the jurisdiction of Wenzhou, recently had as many as 57 tanneries. The authorities have said larger operators, those processing more than 300,000 hides a year, can stay open but they have enforced closures and mergers on smaller companies.

As a result, the number of tanneries working in Pingyang now is only 12.

Local reports said operators would be given incentives to close or merge.
