Drought drives US herd size down

26/07/2012
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that drought conditions in many parts of the country have led to a reduction in the size of the cattle herd.

Stocks of cattle are at their lowest mid-summer level since records began in 1973, the department said in a recent statement.

USDA said that the herd size on July 1, 2012 was 97.8 million head, 2% down on the figure at the same time last year.
