Name change for Izmir cluster

25/07/2012
The leather production cluster at Izmir-Menemen has officially dropped leather from its name.

The move has come about because the number of working tanneries in that part of Turkey has dropped from 80 to only 20. To allow it to continue operating as a free economic zone with special customs arrangements, the authorities have opened the area up to non-leather businesses. Chemicals, plastics and textiles manufacturers are among the companies who have moved in.

Previously called the Menemen Organised Leather Industry Free Zone, it will now be called the Izmir Free Zone.

German operator Remondis has taken over the management and operation of the zone’s waste water treatment plant.
