Prison inmates welcome Tata leather initiative
Inmates at the Indore Central Jail in Madhya Pradesh,
India, have taken up an initiative introduced by Tata International Leather.
The leathergoods producer is teaching inmates to produce
finished goods such as bags and wallets so that they are able to start their
own businesses when they are released.
Since the scheme launched in June, Tata has shipped two
consignments of finished leather for the inmates to work with. They are receiving
specialist training from a Tata employee, who also checks the quality of the
items they make.
The leathergoods are currently sold locally, but the
leather brand plans to start selling across India once quality levels have
improved.
Mumbai-based Tata operates in more than 80 countries and employs
more than 350,000 people worldwide.
