France: new government minister has tanning industry background

17/07/2012
France’s new minister for sport, youth, and community life, Valérie Fourneyron, has roots in the tanning sector. Born Valérie Absire in Petit-Quevilly in Normandy, her family owns and runs the Absire-Sevrey tannery in the nearby town of Maromme, where it forms part of a special industrial complex devoted to traditional skills.

Absire-Sevrey specialises in leather for footwear and upholstery.

The minister’s father helped run the family business for his whole working life, although she decided to study medicine instead, specialising in sports injuries. In the 1990s, she served for a time as the team doctor of the French national volleyball team and of the Rouen Dragons, one of the country’s top ice-hockey teams.

She has said that she entered politics “a bit by accident” and to the great surprise of her family in 1995.
