US beef exports down in volume in May, but up in value
17/07/2012
The US Meat Export Federation has reported that the volume of beef exports was 5% down compared to May last year, reaching 456,343 tonnes.
However, the value of these exports, at nearly $2.2 billion, was 10% higher than the figure for May 2011. USMEF chief executive, Philip Seng, said he was optimistic about beef exports receiving a boost later in the year from Japan. At the moment, only beef from cattle aged 20 months or younger can be exported from the US to Japan, but Mr Seng said a review of this policy was ongoing in Japan and was “progressing smoothly”.
