PTA reports significant drop in leather exports
Chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), SM
Naseem, has revealed that the country’s leather exports fell between July 2011
and May 2012.
Based on figures from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics,
Mr Naseem reported that 22.4 million square-metres of leather were exported
during the 11-month period compared with 26.2 million during the prior-year
period.
The PTA claims many tanneries in the country are now working
at just 70% of capacity and there is a shortage of hides and skins.
However, having added value to the leather it produces,
prices have increased by 11.3%. The PTA believes the value of leather exports
could reach $2 billion in the next three years if the right incentives and
regulations are enforced.
