Australia: lamb flock down from peak but meat highly valued around the world
06/07/2012
Australia’s lamb flock in 2011 numbered 74 million head, down by 61% from a peak size of 120 million. Slaughter produced 393,000 tonnes of meat, which industry body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has described as “one of the most expensive proteins on the market”.
Of this, 49% was shipped to 99 nations around the world, and MLA said its forecasts suggest the overseas markets will continue to grow.
