Livestock traceability programme goes live in New Zealand

A new national animal identification and tracing programme (NAIT) went live for cattle in New Zealand on July 1. It will become mandatory for deer too on March 1, 2013.

Primary industries minister, David Carter, said: “
I am delighted that NAIT already has some 30,000 people and their properties registered on the database. NAIT is a significant step in protecting our farmers in the international marketplace. With most other agricultural producing nations already having computerised tracing of animals, New Zealand simply cannot afford to lag behind.”
