‘Unlucky’ lizard to be made into leathergoods

While water monitor lizards have always been considered unlucky in Thailand, it appears they are about to become useful and luxurious commodities.

According to the Thai Leather Association, the lizard is to be taken off the endangered species list and used to produce leathergoods in the next two years.

Its figures indicate that there are three million water monitor lizards in Thailand compared with just 500,000 cattle. It also claims the leather is cheaper to make than other types of exotic leather and that the lizards are easy to breed and that their meat can also be eaten.

The skins can be used to produce leather footwear, handbags and small leathergoods.
