China’s leather sector appears to be thriving

Figures from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) suggest that leather companies in various Chinese provinces are performing well.

Turnover for the leather and footwear sector in Shishi city, Fujian, grew 30% year-on-year during the first five months of the year. Sales revenues totalled RMB3.9 billion ($614 million), driven by higher demand in the domestic market.

Meanwhile, in Hebei province, profit from large-scale tanneries rose 34% during the first four months of the year. Profits for the period totalled RMB2.5 billion.

Finally, CLIA data shows that leather luggage and bag companies across China recorded a 6.3% increase during the first five months of the year, with turnover of RMB42.3 billion. Profits grew 20% to RMB1.4 billion.
