Slaughter up in Q1 in Brazil, hide availability down

An average carcase weight of 232.9 kilos also represents an increase on the first three months of 2011 when the average weight was 1.7 kilos lighter.
Cattle slaughtered during the first quarter in Brazil generally have a lighter average weight than at other times of the year, owing to the larger number of cows in the mix during the summer months, Brazil’s National Statistics Institute, IBGE, said on reporting the figures.
The institute said more than 8.4 million hides came onto the Brazilian market during the first quarter of 2012, a higher number than the slaughter figure because of the material sold to tanners by traders (including hides of cattle slaughter in the previous quarter), companies that specialise in salting and storing hides and sources in other countries. The figure represents a 3.9% drop on the corresponding total for the first quarter of 2011.
Of particular note was a decline of 25% in the number of hides that came onto the market in the traditional leather-producing state of Rio Grande do Sul during the January-March period, compared to the corresponding period in 2011.
