Better regulation ahead for Ethiopian leather industry
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry says it is working with representatives of the country’s leather sector to improve industry regulation. The Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) is among the organisations working alongside the government department.
It is in the process of drafting a new regulation that aims to regain control of the raw hide and skins market and improve relations between tanneries and their customers.
The proposed regulation is expected to be submitted to the House of People’s Representatives by the end of the current financial year.
According to LIDI director general, Wondu Legesse, it will
then need to be approved and implemented, which could take some time.
