Pakistan: TDAP and PTA discuss leather sector

18/06/2012

Officials from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) have met to discuss possible solutions for the leather sector. The meeting was held at Customs House in Karachi.

First on the agenda was the prevalent practice of smuggling and non-disclosure of live animals and wet blue exports. A new committee will be formed to look into this and the PTA will be involved in recruiting for committee members.

Tariq Puri, chief executive of TDAP, emphasised the importance of government assistance for the sector, particularly leather exporters, who he said were playing a pivotal role in supporting the country’s economy.
