Leather students receive royal lunch invitation

To mark the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, the ancient trading guilds of the City of London, the Livery Companies, arranged a lunch in her honour in London on June 5.

The Leathersellers’ and Curriers’ Companies, who both have links to the leather industry that go back centuries, wanted to include future generations of industry leaders in the event and invited two students from the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies at the University of Northampton and one from the London College of Fashion to take part.

Northampton students Gregory Miller and Stephen Hems, and Louise Darwish from the London College of Fashion accepted the invitation.

Ms Darwish’s studies involve in-depth learning about the use of leather in fashion design, while the representatives of the University of Northampton have just completed year two of that institution’s Bachelor of Science degree in leather technology. Gregory Miller works for Blenkinsop Leathers, a Northampton-based dresser and finisher of leather, and Stephen Hems is from the Scottish Leather Group.
