JBS-Greenpeace court decision
13/06/2012
Greenpeace issued the report, a follow-up to an initial 2009 campaign, on June 6 under the heading JBS Scorecard. It named a group of farms that it said featured on a banned list maintained by the Brazilian environment ministry from which, it alleged, JBS was sourcing cattle.
JBS responded quickly point by point. In some instances, it said it had ceased sourcing cattle from farms before the ministry included them on the banned list. In others, it said the farms did not feature on the list. Media in Brazil have quoted Greenpeace as admitting to getting its data over the individual farms mixed up in some cases. JBS said it would take legal action.
The initial court decision says the campaign group must remove the JBS Scorecard report from its website, stop sending it to JBS customers and stop briefing meat and leather buyers and media about it. Failure to take this action will cost the organisation a fine of around $25,000 per day.
Four hours after the news broke on June 13, the report was still visible and accessible on the Greenpeace international website.
