Shoes shine for Italian export sector

13/06/2012
The Italian footwear industry increased its exports by 12.7% in value in 2011 and by 3.4% in volume, despite a substantial slow-down in the fourth quarter.

This gave the sector export figures for the year of EUR 7.4 billion in value and an export volume of 229 million pairs of shoes.

An increase in value of 12.7% following a rise of 13.7% in 2010 takes footwear exports within touching distance of the levels Italy achieved before the economic downturn of 2008. The country’s footwear manufacturers’ association, ANCI, pointed out in releasing the figures that few areas of the Italian manufacturing sector could make a similar claim.

ANCI president, Cleto Sagripanti, said: “The Italian footwear sector has the potential to do at least as well again in the coming years. But we have to go to the right markets and be careful about how we use the tremendous weapons we have in our armoury.”
