Live cattle export blow for Brazilian meat and tanning sectors

Brazilian meat industry association UNIEC has issued a statement of protest against a decision by the country’s overseas trade promotions agency CAMEX not to impose an export tax on shipments to external markets of live cattle. Clearly, if live cattle exports increase as a result, the tanning industry there will be affected too.

UNIEC president, Francisco Victer, said in the statement that there was a clear contradiction between the decision and recent statements of support from the federal government for industries that seek to add value in Brazil to the country’s raw materials.

“The decision fails to take into account the current situation of abattoirs and meat packing plants in all parts of Brazil that have either closed down completely or are sitting idle for more and more time for the simple reason that not enough cattle are arriving for slaughter.”
