Environment minister praises Peruvian tanning sector

The environment minister of Peru, Manuel Pulgar Vidal, has offered the tanning sector as an example to much of the rest of the manufacturing sector in the country because it is one of only five principal manufacturing sectors to have set up internal environmental regulation.

In a recent interview with local media, Mr Pulgar said Peru had decided as long ago as 1997 that all manufacturing industries must put regulations in place for controlling their impact on the environment. However, because of difficulties in applying one set of guidelines to contrasting areas of manufacture, the government of the day said the ministry responsible for each industrial sector would oversee the installation of relevant regulation.

Today, however, according to Mr Pulgar, more than half the manufacturing sector in Peru is still operating without internal environmental standards. He said: “We have almost 40 sub-sectors in our manufacturing industries. But of these, the only ones that are regulated for their environmental performance are the ones for tanning, for cement, for beer, for paper and for paint.”
