Ambur leather fair kicks off

06/06/2012

Tamil Nadu’s Ambur leather cluster is hosting the third edition of the county’s annual leather fair. Running June 6 and 7, it features goods from finished leather, footwear, component, accessory, machinery and technology providers from across the region.

According to testing and certification services Tüv Süd, Tamil Nadu is home to around 50% of India’s tanneries and around 45% of the country’s leather and leathergoods exports are produced there.

Tüv Süd, which is supporting the fair, has a leather testing lab in Ambur that offers physical testing, performance and quality testing, and regulatory testing for the leather and footwear sector. Before its Ambur facility was established, leather samples were usually sent to Chennai, Bangalore and Hong Kong for testing.

Vice president of product services Tüv Süd South Asia, Suresh Kumar, said: "The Tüv Süd leather testing lab was set up in 2010 with an aim to support leather manufacturers and exporters of Ambur and nearby areas to meet international quality and safety standards through fast delivery and cost efficiency.

"We are proud to have contributed to the progress of the cluster and the growth of Ambur Open through the year stands testimony to it.
