USMEF says Saudi ban on beef exports is unjustified

06/06/2012
In a recent address to US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) members, the organisation’s regional director for Europe and the Middle East, John Brook, said a ban on US beef in Saudi Arabia following an outbreak of BSE in California in April “lacks any scientific justification”. In addition, Mr Brook said the decision by the authorities in Saudi Arabia to put a ban into effect had created “a significant amount of havoc for US exporters”.

US trade officials have persuaded their counterparts in Saudi Arabia to make the ban effective from May 10, which meant that shipments already en route from the US would not be turned back.

No other country in the region has altered the level of market access for US beef. Indonesia is the only other importing country to impose new restrictions on US beef as a result of the BSE case. Indonesia is now allowing only boneless beef cuts from cattle less than 30 months of age.
