Floods and ETP malfunction force Moroccan tannery to close

Morocco’s ministry for the environment has ordered the immediate closure of a tannery near Aïn Témouchent. One hundred workers will lose their jobs.

Local media have named the tannery as La Tafna and have said the ministry took the decision because of the facility’s poor environmental performance.

La Tafna’s tannery, in the town of El Amria, is more than 50 years old and its installations were badly affected by flooding in the area in January 2010. Owing to the costs involved, the company has been unable to operate its effluent treatment plant since that time.
