The Wonderbest tannery run by Brazilian leather and packer group JBS in Guangdong, China, received silver status after its second audit by the Leather Working Group (LWG). The audit took place earlier this year.

LWG is a multi-stakeholder group that assesses the environmental performance of tanneries and awards gold, silver and bronze status to those achieving the best results. The JBS Wonderbest plant received a grade A for traceability during the audit.

In response, the JBS leather division said all nine of its tanneries audited so far by the LWG have received this top grade for traceability, a subject close to the Brazilian leather industry’s heart following controversy when campaign group linked Brazilian leather to deforestation in the Amazon in a 2009 report.

“Traceability is an important part of the work developed by the leather division,” JBS said, “and to receive A in all its audited units demonstrates JBS’s commitment to its supply chain. The result confirms that the company’s traceability system has the tools to trace raw materials from finishing to the slaughterhouse and to the farms of origin, in accordance to the audit protocol for Brazilian tanners.”
