Tanneries to be excluded from all Indian leather mega-clusters

It gave no reason for this development.
Initial announcements about the mega-cluster idea, co-locating suppliers of leather with manufacturers of finished consumer products on one site with advanced common effluent treatment plants and state-funded logistics links, came at the start of 2011. The CLE said then that it had recommended five possible sites to the central government and was awaiting a decision on which site or sites would receive government approval.
One year later, it said its members had identified two sites they want to use, one near Delhi and the other 30 kilometres from Chennai.
CLE president, Rafeeque Ahmed, said at a press conference at the 2012 India International Leather Fair that it was up to companies in the leather industry to identify and purchase the sites for the leather cluster projects and that government support would come in the shape of infrastructure improvements, including better roads, access to water and energy and communications technology. He said he was optimistic that the mega-clusters would be up and running within five years.
These new announcements are the first indication we have seen that the authorities in India want to go ahead with the idea without including tanneries.
