Emphasis on design for Sri Lankan leather sector
Leather and footwear consultant Peter Racklyeft encouraged leathergoods brands to improve their existing design capabilities and to employ skilled craftspeople if they wish to remain profitable.
Addressing a conference at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo, Mr Racklyeft that Sri Lanka must adapt if it wishes to compete with China and India.
As well as focusing on design, he encouraged brands to improve delivery times and to offer more competitive prices.
Also speaking at the event, Udayasiri Kariyawasam, Sri Lanka’s Industrial Development Board chairman, announced that 1,248 enterprises are currently in operation in Sri Lanka and that the country’s leathergoods and footwear and sector currently employs around 20,000.
